LOCATION

The speed reducers referred to in this Instruction are intended to maintain a speed which should already have been reduced by other measures (e.g. signalling, traffic lights, etc.) normally placed at the beginning of the journey or section.
The distance between consecutive speed reducers shall be between 50 and 200 m, but shall not exceed 150 m.

LIMITATIONS

Speed reducers shall not be installed unless technically justified in the following cases:

  • In those sections of the network which are not considered to be crossings. For this purpose, sections with similar traffic patterns, traffic and uses (e.g. proximity to roundabouts in peri-urban environments of the so-called park roads, urban roundabouts, urban penetrations, etc.) and speeds below 50 km/h may be considered as crossings.
  • In the first 50 metres from the start of the journey, when there is no «entry gate» (section where moderate speed is guaranteed).
  • In journeys of less than 200 m in length.
  • At points where the V85 exceeds 60 km/h.
  • On bridges or tunnels or other single works, and 25 m ahead or behind.
  • In crossings with a gradient of more than 5%.
  • In sections of road where there are more than 2 traffic lanes, unless there is a non-crossable median of separation of directions.
  • In crossings with an IMD of more than 5000 vh, or a peak hourly intensity of more than 300 vh.
  • In cross-country sections with an IMD of heavy duty vehicles exceeding 300 vh.
  • In the vicinity of intersections, speed reducers of the « donkey's hoof» type shall not be placed to prevent pedestrians from confusing them with footpaths. In this case only trapezoidal speed reducers may be used, provided there are footpaths.

MOUNTING

  • Prefabricated gearboxes are generally composed of modules that are assembled and fixed to the pavement in situ.
  • Storage, transport, collection and assembly operations shall be carried out with sufficient care to avoid deterioration or excessive stress that could damage the individual elements.
  • If, after appropriate checks, defective modules are found which could adversely affect their strength, stability or behaviour, they should be rejected.
  • At assembly, the individual modules shall be assembled so that the resulting assembly conforms to the shape intended for the device to be installed.
  • The modules and, therefore, the device as a whole, shall be fixed to the pavement by means of screws or chemical adhesives, respecting the tolerances relative to the inlet edges and ensuring the stability and behaviour of the devices against the impact of the wheels of the vehicles passing over them.
  • The locking screws shall be fully embedded in the gearbox without any element or part thereof protruding from the surface of the RPD.

Storage, cleaning and preservation

The working temperature shall not exceed 45 °C. Higher temperatures may deform the support material.
The optimum storage temperature shall be between 15oC and 25oC and a humidity of 10/50%.
Cleaning methods; avoid applying abrasive products. It is recommended to clean them with water and neutral detergents.
