Emergency eyewash bottle
The most effective emergency eyewash system is the emergency eyewash bottles. The volumes of each emergency eyewash bottle range from a 200ml first aid bottle to the size of 1,000ml. The emergency eyewash bottle provides immediate cleaning fluid but for a shorter period than the 15 minutes required, such as the American ANSI standard for a primary emergency eyewash. The emergency eyewash bottle commonly contains a 0.9% sterile sodium chloride solution for mechanical injuries or a 4.9% sterile phosphate buffer solution that neutralizes eye fluids after accidents with acids or alkalis. The emergency eyewash bottles can be purchased with screw caps or with a quick twist-open 1/4 turn - the single-use emergency eyewash bottles are tamper-resistant, however, they can be easily removed in case of emergency.
Differences between emergency showers and emergency eyewash bottles
While both eyewash showers and emergency eyewash bottles meet the established emergency eyewash standards; the sterile solution provided inside any emergency eyewash bottle is safer and more effective for injured eyes. The water supplied in fixed emergency showers is untreated and therefore not a 100% sterile solution lacking living elements - such as microorganisms or bacteria - that could further damage an already compromised eye. Another issue is that the pH of the water does not match that of the human eye; which is especially important in the case of chemical splashes when the pH of the eye is altered.
All these problems with emergency eyewash bottles do not exist; being a treated solution suitable for each risk. Another benefit of emergency eyewash bottles is that they are inexpensive to implement and very easy to maintain. Unlike emergency showers or fixed emergency eyewashes; which require periodic checks for proper functioning. The emergency eyewash bottle only requires annual inspections to check for tampering, expiration dates, etc.; in order to comply with ANSI Z358.1 Section 8.1. or EN standards.
Worker protection is understood from proactive planning
As many companies can attest; it is better to take preventive measures to avoid eye injuries in the workplace than to treat them. In fact; 90 percent of eye injuries can be prevented by using proper protection. But when an eye injury occurs; you must ensure that your facility and employees are properly equipped to handle the emergency situation in the first seconds; having eyewash systems nearby in all areas with workplace hazards. Educate employees on when to take action; as well as where the systems are located and how to use them correctly. By doing so, your organization can mitigate the risks; costs and damages involved in one of the most common workplace injuries - eye injury.
