APPROVALS
The 3M 8822 mask meets the Basic Safety Requirements specified in Articles 10 and 11B of the European Community Directive 89/686 (transposed in Spain to R.D. 1407/1992). Therefore, the product carries the CE mark.
NORMATIVE
This product has been tested according to the NEW European Standard EN149:2001 and meets the requirements of the FFP2 category of that standard.
The main tests to evaluate its performance are:
• Total inward leakage
Ten people are subjected to a series of exercises while walking on a moving treadmill with the mask on. The total amount of contaminant that passes
into the mask due to leaks through the filter, facial seal, and where applicable, through the valve, is measured. For a mask classified as FFP2, total leakage must not exceed 8% for eight of the ten results obtained.
• Filter penetration
The filter efficiency is tested on twelve masks using a sodium chloride aerosol and also a paraffin oil aerosol. For the FFP2 category, the penetration of both test substances must be less than 6%.
• Flammability
Four masks are passed through a flame at 800°C
+/- 50°C at a speed of 5cm/sec. The mask must not continue to burn once removed from contact with the flame.
• Breathing resistance
The resistance created by the mask is evaluated by passing an airflow of 30 l/min. and 95 l/min. For equipment classified as FFP2, it must not exceed 0.7 mbar and 2.4 mbar at the respective flow rates.
• Information
The standard specifies the complete information that must appear on the mask packaging: Adjustment instructions, usage limits, etc. The EN149:2001 standard can be obtained from the Spanish Association for Standardization (AENOR).
ADJUSTMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Place the mask in your hand with the metal piece for the nose facing towards the tips of your fingers and letting the adjustable straps hang freely below your hand.
Position the mask on your chin with the nasal clip facing up.
Pull the upper strap and place it over the back of your head, over your ears. Pull the lower strap and place it at the nape of your neck.
With the tips of your fingers from both hands on the center of the nasal clip, mold the metal piece by pressing and moving your fingers to both sides of the nasal piece. Performing this operation with one hand may lead to a poor fit of the clip and, therefore, to reduced effectiveness in protection.
Before entering the work area, the correct fit of the mask must be checked. To do this, perform the following test:
a) Cover the front of the mask with both hands, being careful not to change its position.
b) Exhale forcefully. You should feel a positive pressure inside
the mask. If any loss of pressure or air escaping from the edges is detected, readjust the position of the mask and/or the tension of the adjustable straps. Check the fit again and repeat the operation until the mask is perfectly adjusted.
NOTE: Do not use with a beard or other facial hair that may prevent a perfect seal between the face and the mask.
WARNINGS
• As with any other respiratory protective equipment, the user must receive training on how to use the equipment correctly.
• This mask does not protect against gases, vapors, solvents from spray painting operations, or atmospheres with oxygen deficiency (< 19.5%).
• Use only in properly ventilated areas where there is no oxygen deficiency situation.
• Do not use when contaminant concentrations exceed the IDHL (immediately dangerous to life or health concentration).
• Leave the area immediately if:
* Breathing becomes difficult
* You feel dizzy or unwell
• Change or replace the mask if it has been damaged, or if breathing resistance becomes excessive, or when it has reached the end of its useful life.
• Do not modify or alter the equipment
• All respiratory protection is effective if the correct equipment has been selected, is fitted correctly, and is used throughout the time you are exposed to the contaminant.
