BENEFITS
What are epoxy adhesives?
Epoxy adhesives from 3M™ are part of the class of adhesives known as "structural adhesives," which also includes acrylic and polyurethane adhesives. Epoxy adhesives are generally formulated with reactive components (base and accelerator) that cure when mixed to form a solid plastic material. 3M offers epoxy adhesives in multiple formats to meet your processing needs:
Two-part: in this format, the base and accelerator are stored separately, allowing the adhesive to have an extended shelf life even when stored at room temperature. These materials are available in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ applicator system, allowing you to dispense, mix, and apply two-part adhesives simultaneously. For larger scale operations, you can purchase them in bulk. Because these parts are mixed at the point of use, you can reduce waste by saving the unused unmixed material for a later job.
One-part: in this format, we mix it for you and ship it frozen. You store it in a freezer, then take it out and thaw it when you're ready to use it.
Adhesive films: in this one-part format, we not only mix it for you, but we also convert it into a film that can be cut to size and placed in your bonding line. We offer a variety of films in different weights/thicknesses and substrates. These films must be stored frozen.
In a two-part epoxy adhesive, once the two parts are mixed in the specified ratio, they begin the curing process and offer a limited working time during which the adhesive can be applied and the two surfaces positioned as needed. Similarly, in a one-part adhesive, there is a limited time after which the material thaws and during which it must be used. This working life or open time lasts from a few minutes to 48 hours or more.
Overall, epoxy adhesives provide high shear and peel strength and have good environmental resistance. These adhesives are preferred for their ease of use, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. Depending on the formulation, epoxy adhesives can be flexible or rigid, clear or opaque, fast or slow curing, high or low flow, at room temperature or elevated temperature. Epoxy adhesives are among the strongest adhesives available, making them ideal for jobs that require strength and durability.
APPLICATIONS
You can use this high-performance epoxy adhesive to replace mechanical fasteners, screws, rivets, and weld points. The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ EC-2216 B/A Grey epoxy adhesive is excellent for bonding a variety of substrates, such as metals and many plastics. It can be dispensed in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ applicator system for minimal waste and professional results. The mixing ratio is 2:3, and the adhesive provides a 90-minute working life to allow for adjustment before curing. The adhesive reaches handling strength in approximately 12 hours and fully cures in 7 days (at 72 °F/22 °C), but can be accelerated with heat. This epoxy is excellent for creating bonds that can be used at cryogenic temperatures. It is widely used for sealing composite laminate edges.
